MEMO Meeting Update

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to clarify things and tell you all that there is NOT a MEMO meeting tonight. The next get together will be the CBS 4 field trip on October 7th. I will post more details about the field trip in the next couple of days! Start thinking of fundraiser ideas for homecoming weekend. Thanks!

Who We Are

As a part of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Multi-Ethnic Media Organization (MEMO) is a student group composed of students from all walks of life. MEMO strives to provide useful resources for students through scholarship opportunities, networking events, and information about careers in media. The organization also strives to build a stronger community among students on campus by providing a common place for journalism students to come together for mentorship and networking, while promoting diversity and inclusiveness. For students applying to the journalism school, MEMO provides guidance regarding the admissions process. MEMO also participates in a number of on-campus and off-campus events, providing opportunities to meet and network with other students and media professionals in the region. All meetings are also held on campus in UMC 353.

For more information, please e-mail cumemo@gmail.com or visit Dave Martinez (david.martinez@colorado.edu) in The Office of Diversity and Inclusiveness in Armory 1B28. Also, follow us @CU_MEMO on Twitter or look us up on Facebook.

Post Meeting Notes- 9/16

Hey Everyone,

Great meeting last night! We had well over 40 people attend! Sequence heads Professor Mike McDevitt and Professor Paul Daugherty talked to us about the expectations the reviewers have to get admitted into the SJMC. Bella Mote talked to us about how to apply to get the International Media Certificate. Susan Avila went over the application process to get admitted into the SJMC.

Here are some notes about what was said last night:

- Mr. Daugherty talked about how it is essential to make it clear that you put "that you have a passion for journalism" in your essay

- He said sometimes a story that doesn't get off topic in your essay can be benificial

- He said "sob" stories don't get you anywhere in your essay

- He said to tell how the journalism school can be benificial for you as an individual for your major

- He said to make sure you start your essay with plenty of time before the deadline

- He said to utilize the writing center, friends, and family to edit your essay

- Professor Mike McDevitt talked about the News Editorial Essay

- He said to pick a article for your essay that really moved you as a journalists

- He said it looks good if you have participated in student media such as CU sports mag, CU Independent, and Radio 1190.

- For advertising majors he said to make sure you think outside the box when composing your essay

All applications can be picked up from Joan at the SJMC desk in Amory.

Good Luck!

MEMO MEETING TONIGHT!!!

Hi Everyone,

This is just a reminder about the MEMO meeting taking place tonight Wednesday (9/16) at 5:15pm in UMC 353.

Sequence heads Professor Mike McDevitt and Professor Paul Daugherty will be talking to us about the expectations the reviewers have to get admitted into the SJMC! We will have applications available for all sequences. Even if you are a long way from applying to the SJMC, I would still recommend you coming to this meeting!

I will only ask that everyone comes with some questions written out to ask the sequence heads.

If you have any questions please contact Dave Martinez or myself.

See you all tonight!
